The Valley of the Sugar Mills is a series of three interconnected valleys outside Trinidad, Cuba. This was Cuba's center for sugar production from the late 18th century until the late 19th century. At the peak, over fifty sugar cane mills were in operation with over 30,000 slaves.
Guaimaro Hacienda was built in 1859 by Jose Mariano Borrell y Lemus, a wealthy sugar merchant, who lived in Trinidad with his family. This was his bachelor pad. It is said that he had over fifteen illegitimate children with several of the slave women. The hacienda was recently restored in 2014 during the 500th-anniversary celebrations in Cuba. Before this, the deteriorating hacienda was home to several families who were relocated here after losing their homes in a hurricane. The stunning frescoes had been painted over when it was a refuge.
The hacienda, with the only private chapel in the country, provided the backdrop for the recreation of an elaborate quinceanera. This is the extravagant celebration when a Cuban girl turns fifteen.
