Gimnasio de Boxeo Rafael Trejo. This iconic open-air gym is one of the oldest in Cuba. In 1962 professional sports were banned, causing many boxers, trainers, and managers to leave the country. The Revolution set out to radically transform the country's economy and society, so activities considered exploitative and linked to capitalism's corrupted nature were outlawed.
It was not the end of Cuban boxing though, but the beginning of a more successful model. With the help of Soviet experts, a new amateur boxing program was developed. The goal was to create a new type of boxer, one motivated by glory, love of sports, and their Motherland rather than by economic gain. The program was an absolute success with Cuba winning 37 Olympic gold medals (73 overall), ranking second in the world. Legnis Cala Maso will be the first female boxer to represent Cuba in the Paris summer Olympics 2024.
